Cows and calves graze on ancient ridge and furrow pasture
The two farms in the Vale of the Red Horse, South Warwickshire  have been in the family for generations.  Today, father, John Gardner and son Nick run the farming enterprise of 120 single suckler beef cows and 500 sheep in order to produce the beef and lamb for the shop.
The Farm Assured farms have hardly changed since the times of the enclosure act and records show that field configurations remain largely the same.  The cows and sheep are grazed on ancient ridge and furrow pasture during the summer and in winter, fed on maize, hay and silage grown on the farms.

Two years ago the Gardners entered the Environmental Stewardship Scheme, which means that hedgerows are maintained and replanted headlands are left around crops, and cover is planted all to encourage wildlife.  And already that has been rewarded with an increase in native flora and fauna.
